             2003 Peacemaker Award
The winner of the 2003 Peacemaker Award is Nancy
Forgang, director of the Gettysburg Community Soup Kitchen.
She was presented with the award in a ceremony held on Monday, April
14, at 7 pm in the Eisenhower Room at the Adams County Public Library.
Nancy Forgang was one of the founders of the Soup
Kitchen in 1991 and has served as its director ever since. Initially,
the Soup Kitchen was a ministry of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church
in Gettysburg, where it is still located. In 1994 it became the
Gettysburg Community Soup Kitchen. It is sponsored by a number of
local churches, assisted by donations from individuals and businesses.
It serves a free, nutritious lunch, six days a week. Currently,
somewhat more than forty people are fed each day. The numer goes
up to fifty or sixty in the summer. As Director, Nancy is in charge
of organizing volunteers to purchase, cook, and serve the food,
in addition to running the day-to-day operations.
Nancy is also a founding member and former Convener
of the local chapter of the Pennsylvania Prison Society. She volunteers
once a month at the South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit, where
she holds cooking classes for the prisoners. The food they cook
is served the next day at the Soup Kitchen.
She is a long-time member and former Chair of the
Gettysburg Interchurch Network for Social Concerns. She is an organist
for St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Middletown.
