More People Living in Cars and Woods,
Soup Kitchen Director Says
The Gettysburg Community Soup Kitchen
has seen an increase in the number of people living in cars and
in “the woods” this
summer, says Director Jan Guillory. These people generally have
few, if any, other resources, and the Soup Kitchen tries to reach
out to them with a little something extra that they can take along
when they finish their noon meal at the soup kitchen. Donations
that would be particularly useful include:
- small jars of peanut butter
- small cans of tuna, Spam, Vienna sausage, ham or chicken
- packs of crackers or granola bars
- new or used can openers
Smaller items are easier to carry and are less likely to leave
leftovers that can’t be safely stored. And it allows people
to have a bit of food for supper and breakfast instead of only
one meal each day to count on. Fortunately, not many people here
are living this way, but over the summer months, there have been
five or six at any given time. Also, the soup kitchen’s shower
has been used regularly. Other items that would be really useful
are small sized personal toiletries, especially shampoo. Donations
can be dropped off at the Soup Kitchen at Prince of Peace Episcopal
Church (20 West High St.) between the hours of 10 and 1, Monday
through Saturday.
The Soup Kitchen has an immediate opening
for a part-time, paid position as Saturday manager (every Saturday,
4 hours). The ideal applicant has a heart for those in need and the
ability to work with volunteers and experiences joy in service.
