FYI: Organizations Serving Hispanics in Adams County
by Bob Appleton

A recent front page headline of the Gettysburg Times said “Fear, Hurt Remain a Week After Raid on Illegals.” The accompanying article referred to the arrest of 36 Mexican men at Pallet Outlet in Biglerville. This incident, along with the nationwide debate over immigration, reveals the plight of these men and their families in Adams County and the United States. In Adams County there are more than a few organizations that are dedicated to the welfare of this significant population. This article and the one to follow in the next newsletter will review many of these groups.

Rural Opportunities, Inc., Migrant Head Start Child and Family Development Program (PO Box 66, 2150 Carlisle Road, Aspers, PA 17304) has announced its summer/fall program to serve the young children of migrant farm workers in Adams County. The program will run from August 1 to sometime in November. ROI is seeking partnerships with other service organizations in the area to meet the needs of these children who are from six weeks to five years old. Contact Diane James at 717-677-9181.

All of these organizations welcome volunteers.

To be continued in next newsletter.
