FYI: Organizations Serving Hispanics in
Adams County

A recent front page headline of the Gettysburg Times said “Fear,
Hurt Remain a Week After Raid on Illegals.” The accompanying
article referred to the arrest of 36 Mexican men at Pallet Outlet
in Biglerville. This incident, along with the nationwide debate
over immigration, reveals the plight of these men and their families
in Adams County and the United States. In Adams County there are
more than a few organizations that are dedicated to the welfare
of this significant population. This article and the one to follow
in the next newsletter will review many of these groups.
Adams County Literacy Council (34 Foth Alley, Gettyburg, PA 17325)
provides educational services including English as a second language,
testing and evaluation and tutoring in various subjects. Contact

The Center/ El Centro (137 South Washington St., Gettysburg,
PA 17325) is a nonprofit community center serving school-age children
with after school and summer programs. El Centro strives to maintain
a close and nurturing relationship with the child and his or her

Generacion Diez (355 Buford Ave., Gettysburg, PA 17325) provides
services to at risk students in four center located in Adams County.
The programs seek to improve school readiness, decrease child abuse
and neglect and improve access to social services for the county’s
migrant and immigrant populations. Contact Amelia Contreras at

Manos Unidas (19 West High St., Gettysburg, PA 17325) is a recent
addition to the groups in the area that are providing information
and support services to the Latino community. Manos Unidas is supported
by the Latino Services Task Force, an affiliate of Healthy Adams

Rural Opportunities, Inc., Migrant Head
Start Child and Family Development Program (PO Box 66, 2150 Carlisle Road, Aspers, PA
17304) has announced its summer/fall program to serve the young
children of migrant farm workers in Adams County. The program will
run from August 1 to sometime in November. ROI is seeking partnerships
with other service organizations in the area to meet the needs
of these children who are from six weeks to five years old. Contact
