Kristen Urban Wins Peace Crafters Award
Dr. Kristen Urban, a Board member of the ICPJ, received a Peace Crafters Award on May 12. The awards are given annually by CALM (Community Alternative Mediation), a non-profit organization in Frederick, Maryland, that promotes peaceful resolution of conflict and provides professional mediation services.
Dr. Urban received the award for her efforts to establish an academic program in Conflict, Peace, and Social Justice at Mount St. Mary’s University, as well as her many projects that attempt to build dialogue and understanding among the Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
Dr. Urban is an associate professor of Political Science at Mount Saint Mary’s University. She has served on the Board of Directors of the ICPJ since 1996. She served as the Chair of the Board from 1998 to 2000. In 2004, she spoke at our Annual Meeting on “Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain.” She has published a number of articles in this newsletter, most recently “Religion and Globalization: Globalization as Ubuntu?” in the September 2007 issue.
According to Dr. Timothy Wolfe, Chair of the Sociology Department at Mount St. Mary’s, “Dr. Urban’s life and work make it clear she is deeply committed to building peace. Her efforts promote peaceful conflict resolution and reduce misunderstanding and violence in communities here and abroad.”
