Unitarian Universalists Move Services

Beginning in July, the Unitarian Universalists of Gettysburg will hold weekly Sunday services at 10:30 a.m. at their new church at 136 South Stratton Street, Gettysburg. The congregation is an official member of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Rev. Ronald B. Crawford, formerly pastoral minister for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, is full-time minister for the Gettysburg church. Sara Gondwe, Director of Religious Education, heads up the program for children and young people.

The church building is actually rather old. It was constructed in 1869, and dismantled and moved from the Littlestown Road to its present location in Gettysburg in 1905. It was then reassembled, encased in brick, and served a succession of Baptist congregations over the years. After 1976 it was home to the Gettysburg Church of Christ. In April 2005 that congregation moved to new quarters on the Hunterstown Road near Route 15, and the building had by now come to be owned by Trinity United Church of Christ.

Rev. Crawford, who has been a frequent guest minister for the Unitarian Universalists of Gettysburg over the past three years, moved to Gettysburg with his wife, Nancy, in January.

UUG invites all to visit them at their new church home. Religious education for our young people is a top priority. “In Our Hands,” a peace and social justice program will be the focal point for our K-6th graders; the older youth group will explore what they believe they stand for. Nursery care is available.

Following is a schedule for late July:

*July 24: “Our Humanist Heritage”: Rev. Ron Crawford begins a three‑unit discussion of Humanist thought and its relevance to Unitarian Universalism today. Refreshments follow.

*July 31: “Growing Old Graciously and Other Nonsense”: Rev. Ron Crawford takes a not entirely serious look at the inevitable circumstances of aging and what we can to about it. Refreshments follow.
