ICPJ Hosts Peace Marchers
On April 14th, the ICPJ hosted about thirty peace activists from Footprints for Peace. On a journey called the “Stop the Bombs Interfaith Pilgrimage,” they came through Gettysburg on their way from Y12 federal nuclear bomb facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to the UN in New York. They left Oak Ridge on March 14 and arrived in New York on May 1, in time for the Non-Proliferation Treaty Conference. The walkers came from Japan, Australia, and all over the U.S.
ICPJ Chair Denise Weldon-Siviy arranged lodging for them at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church and, with the help of other ICPJ board members and volunteers, organized a potluck dinner and a breakfast for them. An evening of song and fellowship followed the potluck.
Afterward, one of the marchers, Ray Hearne, of Sandy Mush, North Carolina, sent us the following letter, along with a photo of the potluck: “Dear Denise, We–the International Peace Walk–arrived safely in NYC on May 1, sustained in soul and body by the generous, welcoming, delicious hospitality of so many hosts along the way! I loved walking into Gettysburg, a place I’ve visited often, when I lived in York County. What a burst of flowering trees! Thank you for coordinating our supper and accommodation; thanks also to all the contributors! May all beings be happy and free of suffering. Ray Hearne.”
