Martin Luther King
DAY ON 2004

In honor of the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Adams County Volunteer Center, United Way and the YWCA of Gettysburg & Adams County, in collaboration with the Adams County Human Relations Council, are sponsoring the 7th Annual A Day On Not A Day Off for the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, January 19, 2004.

In 1983, 15 years after Dr. King’s death, President Reagan signed a bill into law making the Third Monday in January a national holiday. In 1994, President Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act, designed to transform the observance of Martin Luther King’s birthday into a day of service that reflects his life and teachings, bringing people together around the common focus of service to others and breaking down the social and economic barriers that divide us as a nation.

During the first two weeks of January 2004, we will conduct a county wide collection drive for items needed by organizations providing services in Adams County and for the people that they serve. On Monday, January 19, 2004, Martin Luther King Day, 9:00 Noon, anyone who has the day off from school or work is invited to join us at the YWCA East Facility for a Day On by volunteering their time to help sort and distribute items collected for participating organizations.

If your organization needs items for your office or clients (office supplies, non perishable foods, personal hygiene items, household goods, arts & crafts supplies, furniture, etc.), please contact Vickie Corbett at the United Way by Friday, December 19, 2003, by phone: 334-5809, e-mail: uwacvolunteers@planetcable.net, Fax 334 8610, or snail mail : P.O. Box 3545, Gettysburg, PA 17325. To participate, your organization must have a staff member or volunteer present on Monday, January 19, 2004, 9:00 a.m. noon, to help sort donations and accept delivery. If necessary, volunteers with trucks/vans will be available to deliver donations to your agency.
