Peace Camp 2007: Making Peace

This year’s Peace Camp will run from June 18 to 22 nd, meeting at the Gettysburg Area Middle School in the cafeteria. In an effort to attract a wider socio-economic diversity in campers, we are extending the hours to meet the needs of working parents. Camp will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m.

This year’s theme is Making Peace. Campers will learn about famous Peace Makers from the past–some possible examples are Mohandas Gandhi, Samantha Smith, Martin Luther King, Anne Frank, St. Francis of Assisi, Mother Teresa, William Penn, and Rachel Carson–and brainstorm on ways for them to become Peace Makers themselves. Activities will include field trips, crafts, songs, and skits with a wide variety of intriguing costumes provided to spur imaginative plays and ideas. This year’s camp director is Denise Weldon-Siviy, with Mary Gemmill as co-director.

An application form is included on page 7 of this newsletter. There is a fee of $5 per family, but that can be waived in cases of need.

Because of the extended hours, we will be seeking more volunteers than usual. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the ICPJ. Volunteers can come all week, a single day, or even a single morning or afternoon. We ’d be happy to have you whenever the time suits your schedule!
