Seeds to Success Salad Greens Subscription Program
by Alyson Myers
This year, members of the local community and organizations are being invited to assist the Seeds to Success Program through a fundraising project and receive something healthy and delicious for themselves in return: Seeds to Success Salad Greens. Due to a decreasing rate of available government funding for inmate rehabilitation and numerous other social services, SCCAP has placed a greater emphasis on developing micro‑business projects with client programs such as the Seeds to Success program. Therefore sales of the salad greens mix contribute an important source of income to keep the Seeds Program running.
The Seeds to Success Garden is also used to teach vocational horticulture, job-readiness skills, and small-scale business applications. For the past two years, the majority of the salad greens produced by Seeds to Success participants have been sold in Washington, D.C., at farmers’ markets. This year a subscription‑buying program is being launched, so that local community members can enjoy the salad greens and support the Seeds project that benefits our community.
This is how it will work: Individuals and families will sign up to receive a subscription of salad greens for each week of a 28-week season that runs from April 28 to October 20. There are two subscription plans being offered based on bag size. For those wanting a ½-pound bag ($4.00/bag*) each week, the cost is $112. For those who would want a 1-pound bag ($8.00*), the cost is $224. (These prices may seem high, but they compare very favorably with the unit prices of packaged greens at the grocery store!)
Salad Greens Subscribers will pay for the greens in advance, which gives Seeds to Success the much‑needed income at the beginning of the growing season. In return, subscription members are guaranteed weekly salad greens. Subscribers will be the project’s first priority to receive this excellent garden product. (There is a “Plan B” in place in the event of a production problem that would limit greens supply.)
Salad mix subscriptions will need to be picked up at the Seeds to Success Life Skills Center on either Tuesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. or Saturday between 9:30 and11:30 a.m. Subscribers are being encouraged to form member groups to help with pickup and distribution.
