Heritage Festival Line-Up Announced

Although it’s just turned June, it’s not too soon to begin thinking about the 2009 Adams County Heritage Festival, scheduled for Sunday, September 20, at the Gettysburg Rec Park. This year’s celebration will once again give us an opportunity to appreciate the music, food, unity, and varied ethnic heritages of Adams County. Starting off the afternoon will be peripatetic bagpiper Rodney Yeaple, followed by the Barnstormers and RockCandy Cloggers: musicians Tom Jolin and Slim Harrison with cloggers Rock Howland and Candy Ranlet.

The next ensemble represents first in the history of the Festival: Iranian-American musician Roya Bahrami and her ensemble, whose mission is “to offer a message of unity through music.” The group, which consists of four instruments: santur, daf and riqq drums, guitar and keyboard, will present Sufi, Andalusian and Persian music.

Up next, and certainly not least, will be South Asian dancers Rachita and Bansari, presenting graceful Indian gestures in the Bharat Natayam tradition.

Back again will be Festival favorites, the youthful dancers of Generación Diez with their colorful costumes and toe-tapping rhythms. They will be followed by the five-member Folkemer Family Band presenting lively Pennsylvania folk songs with a profusion of instruments and vocals. The Festival will end once again with a children’s play, “Cinderella,” presented this year by a group of African American young people under the direction of Ann Griffith.

Circle your calendar and plan to meet friends, enjoy children’s activities, view non-profit booths, and sample delicious ethnic foods. Because it brings out the best in us, the Heritage Festival is one of the things we do right in Adams County!
