ICPJ Sponsors Lecture on Murals of Northern Ireland
On Wednesday, September 8, at 7:30 p.m., in the Gettysburg College Chapel Lounge, Jessica Myers, Gettysburg College ’04, will give an illustrated presentation on the wall murals of Northern Ireland, entitled “Murals, the Silent Voice of Conflict.” Myers began her study of the murals during her junior year abroad in Ireland and was able to continue collecting images and recording changes in the murals with the help of a special research grant from the Provost’s Office of the College. She completed a thesis on the murals as an independent study for her special major on Understanding Peace through the Study of Conflict and presented her work in July 2004 as part of the Art and Peace Commission at the International Peace Research Association meeting in Sopron, Hungary.
Jess Myers talks with artists and partisans on both sides of the conflict in Northern Ireland. She notes that murals of the Catholic Nationalists often feature martyrs and historical events, whereas the Protestant Loyalists are more likely to feature paramilitary groups. Lately, however, new murals have begun to reflect dissatisfaction of all groups with the failure of various parties to live up to the recent peace agreement. Myers will continue her study of the murals as she pursues a Master’s degree at the University of Ulster this fall. Her talk is being sponsored by the Interfaith Center for Peace and Justice and CRAGI (Conflict Resolution and Global Interdependence).
