Travel Troupe to Dig 'n' Tel at Heritage Festival
Baltimore-born playwright Flora Atkin will be on hand to introduce her play when the Adams County Traveling Children’s Theater Troupe performs at the Heritage Festival, September 19 at 4 p.m., at the Gettysburg Recreation Park. Atkin’s Dig ‘n’ Tel, a story of wise folks and fools from Jewish lore, is the tenth annual production by the Traveling Troupe, produced by the Adams County Arts Council. Mrs. Atkin, a recipient of the prestigious Chorpenning Cup which recognizes writers of outstanding plays for children, will appear at the troupe’s performance and meet the public afterward. She will also speak about writing for children’s theater on Monday, September 20, at 11 a.m., at the Gettysburg campus of H.A.C.C. The public is invited to attend the free presentation. Author of a dozen globe‑ranging musical comedies for kids, Atkin, an active octogenarian who has devoted her life to the theater arts, wrote four of the troupe’s former hits, including the Tarradiddle shows, Golliwhoppers and Skupperduppers. Her plays have been performed at the Kennedy Center and Smithsonian Institute.
Founder of a children’s theater at not-so-far-away Glen Echo Park in suburban Washington, Mrs. Atkin traveled extensively with her husband and discovered a wealth of folklore all over the planet. She has developed entertainment from the stories of Nigeria, India, Puerto Rico, and Oklahoma! With Dig ‘n’ Tel, she conjured a musical adventure which follows eager archeologists as they unearth objects that spin stories out of Jewish folk tales. The Traveling Troupe artistic director is Ann Griffith.
The 2004 ACTCTT season is sponsored by the LeVan Family Foundation, Sprint, the Robert C. Hoffman Charitable Endowment Trust, The Pub & Restaurant, and Built to Last Contracting. back to top
