Heritage Festival Features Blues, Zydeco, Celtic Bands, Indian and Mexican Dance

The fourteenth annual Adams County Heritage Festival will be held on Sunday, September 18, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., at the Gettysburg Recreation Park. The Festival was initiated by the ICPJ, which continues to organize it, with the help of other local organizations (notably the Adams County Arts Council and the YWCA of Gettysburg and Adams County) and lots of volunteer helpers. The purpose of the Festival is to celebrate the many ethnic and cultural traditions of our county through foods, arts and crafts, music, and drama.

This year’s mainstage entertainment program will begin, after opening ceremonies, with Lea Gilmore and Sangmelé at 12:15. Sangmelé (a Creole word meaning mixed blood) is an acoustic trio from Westminster, MD, comprising vocalist Lea Gilmore, guitarist Walt Michael, and bassist Dr. Henry Rieff. The group performs the roots music of the African American experience, with a focus on blues and gospel selections. At 1:00, Vatsala Srinivas, of the Natya Kala Mandir Institute of Indian Classical Dance, Timonium, MD, will perform classical Bharatha Natyam dance.

Cormorant’s Fancy, a Gettysburg-based Celtic group, will perform at 1:45, followed at 2:30 by students from Generación Diez, also based in Gettysburg, performing Mexican dances. Zydeco-a-Go-Go, a five-piece zydeco band from Philadelphia, performs at 3:00, and the program concludes with a children’s play, “The Little Red Hen Show: A Barnyard of Stories,” sponsored by the Adams County Arts Council, at 4 p.m.

The Festival features foods, arts and crafts from many ethnic traditions, as well as displays by local non-profit agencies and a full program of children’s activities.

If you wish to have a food or craft booth at the festival or to have a display for your non-profit, or if you wish to volunteer to help with the organization of the Festival or at the Festival itself, please e-mail us at achf@icpj-gettysburg.org, visit our website at http://www.icpj-gettysburg.org/festival.htm, or call Bill Collinge at 717-334-8943.
